Applied Leadership of

Improving Teaching

Outstanding teaching is secured through outstanding leadership. Our Applied Leadership of Improving Teaching Programme, allows school leaders to work together to formulate a common understanding of improving teaching, create a shared language for pedagogy and develop a route map for achieving outstanding teaching across the learning community.

WHO IS THE PROGRAMME FOR?

The Applied Leadership of Improving Teaching Programme is suitable for any school who wishes to develop a school wide programme for improving teaching.

WHAT’S INVOLVED?

Tauheedul College will work with a school’s senior and middle leader teams to jointly develop a:

  • Teaching Improvement Framework which identifies the criteria for teaching from outstanding to inadequate
  • School Leadership and Management Improvement Framework which identifies the criteria for Leadership and Management from outstanding to inadequate

The Frameworks will reference Ofsted and the Teachers’ Standards but will be bespoke and personalised to the context and vision of the school and shaped by the leadership team.  Working together, TCTL and the leadership team launch the Teaching Improvement Framework to secure a common understanding of the criteria and consistency in their application.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The programme consists of:

  • Six three hour sessions, typically delivered as twilights
  • One school based joint practice development day
  • Three Senior Leadership Team consultation meetings to guide the programme

DURATION

Typically, the programme lasts around 2 terms, though there is no set schedule – we will work with you to agree a schedule which aligns to the needs of the school.

The Macclesfield Academy in Cheshire East was in Special Measures when it became an Academy in September 2012. The Applied Leadership of Teaching Programme ran from October 2012 to July 2013. In January 2014, the Academy was inspected and judged to be good. Ofsted reported:

“The actions taken to improve the quality of teaching and an innovative curriculum underpins the good progress students make and, have led to significant improvements in the very short time since the last inspection.”

“The leadership and management at all levels has been very effective in improving the quality and consistency of teaching rapidly across the academy, through lesson observations, feedback and coaching.”

“Culcheth High School in Warrington was judged to be good by Ofsted in 2014 having previously ‘required improvement’. The Senior Leader Team have worked with Tauheedul to further develop the programme with a view to using it to help secure a judgement of ‘outstanding’ teaching in the next 12 months.”
