The National Professional Qualification for Executive Leadership (NPQEL) is our flagship qualification designed to develop the next generation of system leaders with the skills and capabilities to lead across a number of schools.

Executive Headteachers (including CEOs of small MATs) play an increasingly important strategic role in the school leadership landscape. Their role is crucial to the effectiveness of multi-school groupings and the outcomes of the children they serve.

Executive Headship requires a new and different mix of skills and experience to traditional Headship. Executive Headteachers must work within a complex variety of contexts and governance and accountability structures. The role requires higher levels of strategic thinking; greater emphasis on coaching, delegating and achieving change through others; consistency and collaboration across and between schools; and a strong capacity to look outward.

Who is the Programme for?

NPQEL is for those Headteachers who are, or are aspiring to become, an executive Headteacher or CEO of a MAT with responsibility for leading several schools.

What’s Involved?

To achieve the NPQEL qualification you’ll need to successfully:

  • Complete 6 study modules
  • Undertake 2 final assessment tasks

The Study Modules

The six NPQEL study modules set out what a leader should know and be able to do.  Modules focus on improving leadership practice and support the development of the critical leadership behaviours of commitment, collaboration, personal drive, resilience, awareness, integrity and respect; behaviours which exemplify how the best leaders operate.

The six study modules you must complete are:

Identify and anticipate changes in the external or strategic environment and understand their impact on different organisations Techniques to analyse the external or strategic environment
Conceptual, critical thinking, statistical and data analysis tools, techniques and concepts that support decision-making and strategy development
Design a sustainable business development strategy, whether for growth, stabilisation or specialisation Research into, and examples of, successful business development strategies, including growth, stabilisation and specialisation, drawn from a range of schools and non-school contexts
Research into, and examples of, the causes of business failure, drawn from a range of schools and non-school contexts
Lead a programme of significant change across several schools Research into, and examples of, delivering change across a number of organisations, drawn from a range of schools and non-school contexts
Learn how to: Learn about:
Assess and improve teaching quality, pupil progress and attainment in a range of different contexts, including for disadvantaged pupils or those with particular needs Systems and techniques used to evaluate teaching quality, pupil progress and attainment across several schools
Domestic and international research into, and examples of, school improvement strategies in relation to progress, attainment and behaviour, drawn from a range of different schools, including interventions targeted at disadvantaged pupils or those with particular needs
Deploy school-to-school support systems effectively to improve teaching quality, the school curriculum, pupil progress and attainment Tools and techniques to improve teaching quality across several schools
Research into, and examples of, school-to-school support systems that have improved the school curriculum, pupil progress and attainment, drawn from a range of schools
Learn how to: Learn about:
Motivate and unite a wide range of people across organisations around visionary or challenging goals Tools and techniques to identify the motivations and priorities of colleagues and external stakeholders
Techniques to identify personal motivations and moral purpose, and examples of how to reflect these in policies or strategies, drawn from a range of schools and non-school contexts
Act as a credible public advocate for the organisation, promoting and defending its aims, vision and reputation convincingly and robustly Techniques, tools and strategies for marketing the organisation and handling the media, drawn from a range of schools and non-school contexts
Contribute to local and central government policy making The machinery of central government, local government and other public services, including opportunities to collaborate in policy making

Deploy resources strategically across a number of organisations, to maximise efficiency whilst improving pupil outcomes Research into, and examples of, how economies of scale and efficiencies have been achieved across several organisations, drawn from a range of schools and non-school contexts
Indicators of the effective and ineffective use of resources
Maximise financial resources available, through income generation activities, fundraising, sponsorship and grants Sources of funding and examples of successful funding bids
Hold those with responsibility for the management of resources and risks to account effectively Examples of resource and risk management arrangements drawn from a range of schools and non-school contexts, including budgeting and forecasting, internal controls, auditing and accounting, tolerances and risk appetite
The roles and professional standards of key resource management functions
The requirements of the financial accountability framework, as set out in the Academies Financial Handbook
Learn how to: Learn about:
Identify long-term or strategic capability gaps across several schools, in collaboration with the governing board Tools and techniques to assess workforce capability across several organisations, from schools and non-school contexts
Factors that impact on the supply and demand of teaching and non-teaching staff
Deploy staff strategically to increase the organisation’s responsiveness and resilience to change Examples of induction, succession planning and talent management techniques/systems drawn from schools and non-school contexts
Examples, drawn from schools and non-school contexts, of how organisations have deployed staff strategically to:

  • enhance professional development
  • spread critical knowledge and skills
  • increase responsiveness and resilience to change

Programme Structure

The NPQEL forms a 12 month programme of study which includes eight full day face to face workshops across the year, including a dedicated workshop designed to support and challenge you in preparation for the Final Assessment tasks.

All modules are led by experienced national education and industry leaders. Face-to-face events are supplemented by workplace learning, reading, reflections and online learning.

The programmes provides a transformational executive development experience.  You will work with accomplished peers, industry thought leaders and world class professionals.

We also provide expert coaching. During this coaching, you will not only receive support and challenge from a credible leader, you will also learn the vital coaching skills required for people management in multiple settings.

Assessment

In order to gain the qualification, you must successfully complete the NPQEL final assessment.

The final assessment comprises 2 tasks:

  • Designing a sustainable business development strategy for your organisation
  • Leading an improvement project across several schools
